Mondego: The River is Everywhere

Participatory Sonic Arts Project

The project is centred in the listening experience in situ, along the Mondego river and documents its natural spatial qualities as well as the impact of pollution and human intervention. The project explores the notion of solastalgia and the loss felt in natural environments with their gradual degradation due to human action. The Mondego river, the longest in Portuguese territory and is here explored from the point of view of transformation of the soundscape and its impact on human and non-human communities. The sonic, organic and residual materiality of the river is sculpturally expressed in an immersive and interactive environment, inviting the public to reflect on the presence and belonging of humanity in nature.

The project culminates in an immersive installation at Convento de São Francisco, Coimbra in the context of the 2021 edition of “Dar a Ouvir”.

The fieldwork and artistic process is documented here, where you can also find out how to participate in the project.
